Nevada Regional Country Showdown Finalist
Tom was a Country Showdown Regional finalist in 2015 who competed in Laughlin NV. but started his journey in his hometown of St. George Utah at their local finals. As well as being a finalists in the Country Showdown, Tom was also awarded the “Best Of Utah” award for his music in 2017. He’s been featured on USA Today, CNN, Fox News and NPR.
Tom’s Music Journey
Tom began playing music at that age of 9 with his harmonica and picked up singing when he was a teenager. He calls his music “authentic country blues”. He’s been playing 300 shows a year which he’s been doing for the past 5 years from as far north as Seattle all the way to Georgia. He calls himself a “one man band” playing dobro, harmonica while keeping the beat playing percussion with his feet. While often playing solo he’s enjoyed working with musicians all over the United States hiring a fiddle player in Wyoming as well as other instrumentalists to help back him at his other shows.
His first full band album “Makes You Want To Howl” is currently being mixed down in the Sound Emporium studio by a well known producer who has also worked on albums for Chris Stapleton.
Tom writes most of his music while traveling which he does a lot, in fact he put in 60,000 miles in 2016. He finds a lot of songwriting inspiration while on the road so he brings note pads with him writing down full lyric and song idea’s. He says many songs are about his own life specifically a song he wrote about his grandfather called “Roy’s Song”. His grandfather was also a musician who even had the pleasure of backing Hand Williams Sr. during one of his Grand Ol Opry appearances.
Advice For Other Artists
Tom says he really enjoyed his time working with the Showdown and said he’s met a lot of people along the way who have kept in touch. He believes it’s been a great networking opportunity for his music and would even consider entering again. His advice to other artists who consider participating in the Country Showdown is if you want to make a real impact, always sing something from the heart. He recommends that if you want to stand out, make sure to use the house band instead of just backing yourself on guitar.
